Root Canal Treatment: The Facts With Surf City Dental
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment) is a procedure that can reverse the damages caused by untreated cavities. Root canal treatment may also be necessary in instances of extreme trauma or nerve damage in the mouth.
A root canal is performed to clean out infection and alleviate painful symptoms that are associated with each of these instances.
When is a root canal needed?
Root canal treatment becomes necessary when the pulp (soft tissue inside the root canal) becomes inflamed or infected because of untreated cavities or nerve damage. This infection can eat away at surrounding bone, and will be unable to heal on it’s own. A root canal treatment will clean out infected tooth pulp and disinfect canals of the tooth.
Symptoms that indicate an infection in the pulp of your tooth include:
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pressure when biting
- Bad taste in the mouth
How is a root canal done?
During root canal treatment, your doctor will remove the infected pulp, carefully clean and reshape the inside of the root canal, then fill and seal the space. The procedure will be performed using local anesthetic, and usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes.
